ABC & Disney+ Bring Back Beloved TV Show for Special Event
Disney has announced the return of one of the most beloved comedy shows ever for a special ABC and Disney+ event from executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The teaser trailer for the special event has been revealed, confirming that fan-favorite characters from Jim Henson’s iconic variety sketch comedy, The Muppet Show, are officially coming back with former Disney Channel star and Grammy-winning popstar Sabrina Carpenter.
“It’s The Muppet Show! Kermit, Miss Piggy, and the beloved Muppet gang are back with a brand-new special event,” reads the synopsis for the special. “Music, comedy, and a whole lot of chaos are bound to ensue when The Muppets once again take the stage of the original Muppet Theatre with their very special guest, Sabrina Carpenter!”

When is the release date for ABC & Disney+’s The Muppet Show special?
The Muppet Show special event is scheduled to premiere on February 4, 2026, exclusively on Disney+ and ABC. This comes ahead of the iconic show’s 50th anniversary on September 5, 2026. Ahead of the special, fans can first rewatch all five seasons of the classic sitcom, which are currently on Disney+.
The special event is directed and executive-produced by Alex Timbers. Veteran Muppet performers Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman, and Matt Vogel will perform the majority of the iconic Muppet characters in this production. They will also be supported by a talented team of additional performers, including Dave Goelz. The latter has performed with The Muppets for over 50 years. Goelz was also one of the performers on the original The Muppet Show and originated the characters Gonzo and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, among many others.
In addition to appearing as a special guest, Carpenter has also signed on as an executive producer alongside Rogen, Goldberg, James Weaver, and Alex McAtee for Point Grey Pictures, David Lightbody, Leigh Slaughter, and Michael Steinbach for The Muppets Studio, Albertina Rizzo, Matt Vogel, and Eric Jacobson. It is a production by 20th Television and Disney Branded Television.
The Muppet Show was created and produced by Jim Henson. It ran on-air for five seasons from 1976 to 1981. The series was a variety show that starred Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, Rowlf the Dog, Scooter, Animal, Walter, and more, where they presented sketches and musical numbers. It also featured many high-profile guest-stars such as Steve Martin, Elton John, Julie Andrews, Liza Minelli, Diana Ross, and Mark Hamill.
