A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner shared how the hit HBO show will avoid making the same fatal mistake as Game of Thrones.

What mistake will A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms avoid?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on Tales of Dunk and Egg, a series of fantasy novellas by author George R.R. Martin. There have been three novellas released. HBO already renewed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for Season 2, and if popularity continues to increase, a third season will likely be greenlit.

What happens if the show continues past Season 3 without any source material? This is what happened in the later seasons of Game of Thrones. David Benioff and D. B. Weiss did not have any novels from Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire to follow. Without any roadmap from a book, Game of Thrones Season 8 received significant backlash, especially for the ending.

Showrunner Ira Parker, who co-created A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms with Martin, understands concerns if the show surpasses the source material. During a Reddit AMA, Parker addressed a question about his plans for the show after Season 3 that should put fans at ease.

“Look, in some ways, we know a lot more about what happens after these three novellas because of all the supporting material (you like how i referred to asoiaf as supporting material for d&e 😉 ), and so there’s less inherent danger,” Parker wrote. “Not no danger, just less… Anything beyond book 3 (if we could ever be so wonderfully lucky) would highly involve George.”

Even without published works, Parker said that Martin has “10 to 12” outlines for books and novellas about Dunk and Egg.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows the adventures of an unlikely duo: a knight, Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey), and his squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell).

The fifth episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will air on HBO on February 15.
